dc.description.abstractIn power transmission system using gearbox thermal consideration limits the choice of materials and lubricants. In such cases, the manner in which the system and its operating conditions influence temperature levels and which intern changes material properties and system performance. Also, the demand for increased power capacity within more compact spatial dimensions creates the need for cost effective improved cooling against that of using more sophisticated materials and lubricants having higher permissible operating temperatures. For most of the medium and all high power transmitting gearboxes thermal rating will be lesser then the mechanical rating. Generally, while designing a gear box thermal rating is neglected and concentration is focused on mechanical rating. But thermal rating also has appreciable effect on the working of gear box. In present work the fabricated gearbox housing has been used for thermal analysis. The modeling of the gearbox is done on PRO/ENGINEER WILDFIRE 2.0. The thermal analysis is performed in ANSYS WORKBENCH 8.0, which is powerful Finite Element Software. The power loss which converts into heat is given as load to gear box. The convective heat coefficient of oil to gear casing is given boundary condition and after analysis the temperature distribution is obtained in various parts of gearbox. The aim of project work is to establish a methodology to predict the temperature distribution in a helical and spiral bevel gear box using Finite Element Analysis which can be used as a basis for the thermal rating.en
