Abstract: This project deals with speed control of dc motor using fractional order proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. Fractional order PID controller consists of integer order proportional and fractional integral-derivative terms. In this, in the first step simulation of the part for the dc motor speed control using fractional order PID controller has been done. The comparison between the fractional order and integer order PID controller has been carried out using both local and global optimization techniques. The closed loop performance and controller effort in each case are compared with integer order PID and fractional order PID controller subjected to different integral performance indices. Simulation results shows that the proposed fractional order PID controller outperforms the integer order PID controller in most cases. The next task done is a comparative analysis of known optimization techniques like fuzzy, genetic, fminsearch and fmincon. All the optimization techniques prove that the fractional PID performs better in terms of rise time, settling time and lesser overshoot. Also, the implantation on hardware to verify the simulation results has to be done. The hardware result shows that the fuzzy based fractional PID has lesser rise time as compared to others.
