Abstract: Magnetic cores of various types play a key role in many of the components used in SMPS. High-performance ferrite elements, which result from accumulated expertise and excellent microstructure control technologies, have become essential in reducing the weight and improving the performance of advanced electronic devices that are transforming the world around us. They contribute to achieve greater size reductions & performance improvements of high-performance switching power supplies. This paper presents a comparative analysis of various ferrite geometries used in SMPS. The comparison covers all the important aspects of ferrite cores. Transformer core size selection criteria for different topologies are also discussed. General formula is given for core size selection in different topologies.
