dc.description.abstract | Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels resulting from impaired insulin secretion or action. One of the most serious complications of diabetes is diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), which is a chronic wound that can lead to lower extremity amputation. DFUs result from neuropathy, vascular insufficiency, and impaired wound healing. The prevalence of DFUs is increasing worldwide, and it represents a significant public health problem. Therapeutic options for DFUs are numerous and include wound debridement, offloading, topical and systemic antibiotics, dressings, negative pressure wound therapy, growth factors, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However, treatment should be individualized based on the stage and severity of the ulcer, patient's overall health, and the presence of infection. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention are essential to prevent the development of DFUs. Therefore, patients with diabetes should receive regular foot exams and education on proper foot care. Prevention strategies include maintaining good glycaemic control, wearing appropriate footwear, and regular foot inspections. In conclusion, DFUs represent a significant complication of diabetes, with a high risk of lower extremity amputation. Effective management of DFUs requires a multidisciplinary approach and individualized treatment plans that consider the stage and severity of the ulcer, patient's overall health, and the presence of infection. Prevention strategies should also be emphasized to reduce the incidence of DFUs. | en_US |
