Abstract: The repetition of spatial elements plays a defining role in shaping the architecture of a city. This repetition creates a sense of order, continuity, and identity within the urban fabric. Pavilions as one of the architectural element is considered significant, which contribute to the overall composition and the collective experience of the city's built environment. By repeating similar structures, the cityscape gains a co - hesive and recognizable character that reflects its cultural and historical context. This research aims to explore the role of pavilions as transitional spaces and their contribution to the making of buildings, public spaces, and the overall architec - ture of a city. The objectives include identifying different typologies of pavilions based on connectivity and accessibility understanding the spatial characteristics that impact the city's identity, and recognizing the various formations of pavilions that define space. This case study focuses on the city of Udaipur and examines the boundaries of Pichola Lake at the city level. Specifically, it analyses Gangaur Ghat, a public space located along the lake, while also studying Amet Haveli and Bag - hor Haveli at the building level. The methodology involves a quantitative approach which includes space syntax analysis. The study's scope is focused on pavilions as transitional spaces. The research findings are expected to enhance our under - standing of the pavilion's significance in shaping the character of the city1.2 Aim 1.3 Objectives This research aims to explore the role of pavilions as transitional spaces and their contribution to the making of buildings, public spaces, and the overall architecture of a city. Determine the significances of transitional spaces using the pavilions of Udaipur. The research revolves around analysing the role of a pavilion as a transitional space in the making of a building, public space, and architecture of the city. The objective for the research are as follow: 1. Identifying the various formations of the pavilion as an element helps define the space. 2. To identify the different typologies of pavilions based on their connectivity and accessibility in the city's morphology. 3. To understand the spatial characteristics of the pavilions that have had an im - pact on the city’s spatial network. 1.4 Scope and Limitations 1. The scope of the study is limited to the role of pavilions as transitional spaces in the making of a building, public space, and architecture of the city 2. It does not encompass other architectural elements or aspects of urban planning. 3. Study is limitied to city of Udaipur1.5 Methodology 1.2 Aim 1.3 Objectives This research aims to explore the role of pavilions as transitional spaces and their contribution to the making of buildings, public spaces, and the overall architecture of a city. A simple definition of a term pavilion given is ,“ a pavil - ion is defined as a freestanding structure that is often designed to be temporary or semi-permanent. Pavilions are typically open on one or more sides, and their roofs are supported by columns or other struc - tural elements.” (Ching, Francis D. K. Architecture: Form, Space, & Order. Wiley, 2014. Accessed 25 May 2023) Orig - inally, pavilions were temporary structures, similar to modern canvas marquees or tents, that were erected for special occasions. However, over time, they became more permanent. The term "pavilion" is accompanied by other similar terms such as belvedere, gazebo, folly, kiosk, chhatri, and mandapam, all of which share the same primary definition or connotations as pavilions. As a result, an exposition has been created that takes into account the connotations of the term "pavilion" as well as its evolution and usage as an architectural form. The research will utilise a mixed methodology, combining a literature review and analytical approach that incorporates space syntax. The literature review will establish a analytical framework on the emergence of pavilions as transitional spaces and their impact on shaping the city’s character and identity. Space syntax analysis will facilitate a thorough investigation of pavilions’ role as transitional spaces, revealing patterns and interrelationships within the urban context. This comprehensive approach aims to generate insightful research findings, enhancing our understanding of pavilions’ significance in shaping the built environment A simple definition of a term pavilion given is ,“ a pavil - ion is defined as a freestanding structure that is often designed to be temporary or semi-permanent.
