Evaluating the Language of Temple Architecture in Dharampur, Valsad: Case of Radhe-Krishna Temple

Abstract

This research study aims to investigate the architectural characteristics of the Radhe-Krishna Temple in the Valsad region. The study focuses on the temple’s material, structure, and ornamentation to understand the values and techniques used in building it. The research seeks to document and analyze the temple’s architectural language to gain insights into its historical background, associated rituals, spatial organization, structural systems, and ornamentations. The study is part of a broader framework of Hindu temple architecture that includes various temple styles across India, such as the Nagara style in North India, the Dravida style in South India, and the Vesara style in Central India. The study also recognizes the influence of colonial-era elements and European architectural styles on traditional Indian temple architecture. The conclusion of the study brings together the findings regarding the temple’s material, structural, and decorative aspects. It emphasizes the thoughtful selection and coordination of materials, including basalt stone, bricks, wood, and roofing, which contribute to the temple’s cultural and symbolic importance. The integration of these elements is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, conveying religious narratives and enhancing the temple’s visual appeal. The research highlights the significance of observing how these elements work together regarding material choice, color palette, and architectural style.
