Abstract: The city is where we define ourselves, therefore it is crucial to discuss urban identity to be able to de cide on the changes in the urban qualities. This research aims to discuss the concept of identity and its contributing factors. It examines identity-based on parameters that include physical appearance, socio-cultural dynamics and the meanings that people associate with places. The thesis investigates the theoretical framework consisting of literature and dialogue on identity and examines the prospects of identity in the case of three localities of Ahmedabad which are Khad ia, Paldi and Bapunagar. The study relies on analysis of data collection of physical aspects through observations, and socio-cultural and cognitive aspects via literature review, interviews and structured surveys. The findings show that urban identity incorporates the notions of historic evolution, urban form, social behavior, and the associated meanings. This study will conclude by comparing and analyzing the urban identity components of case studies and discussing the concepts of identity by Lynch and Relph in the context of identity of selected case studies. Keywords : Urban Identity, Ahmedabad city, locality, urban form, people’s perception
