Abstract: This thesis examines the role of Gira Sarabhai in the making of the National Institute of Design (NID) and her significant contributions to the fields of art, architecture, and design. It explores the connection between a well-conceived institutional program and its architectural manifestation, emphasizing the qualitative impact of a building’s program on its role in society and in shaping the future of a nation. The research delves into Gira Sarabhai’s role as a designer, architect, and pedagogue. The study investigates the historical context and specific actions taken by Gira Sarabhai in establishing and nurturing the NID, aiming to understand her visionary ideas, leadership style, and key decisions. This research addresses the gap in understanding Gira Sarabhai’s influentialrole in establishing the NID and fostering the design culture in India, exploring her challenges, strategies, and pioneering efforts. Qualitative research methods, including archival analysis, interviews, and case studies, form the foundation of this research. By analyzing historical documents, articles and reports and conducting interviews with contemporaries, friends, students and colleagues of Gira Sarabhai, the study gathers relevant information and insights. The expected outcomes of this research include uncovering Gira Sarabhai’s visionary ideas, her influence on the NID’s curriculum and pedagogy, and her endeavours to establish a design ecosystem integrating culture, craftsmanship, and innovation. The findings aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of her contributions and legacy, shedding light on the development of design education in India. The research outcomes have practical applications for professionals interested in design history. By examining Gira Sarabhai’s approach and achievements, this research can inspire and inform the development of future design institutions and initiatives. Additionally, the study contributes to the broader discourse on women’s contributions in architecture and design, highlighting the pivotal role of female leaders in shaping institutions and design practices. In conclusion, this research on the role of Gira Sarabhai in the making of the NID examinesher contributions to design education, architecture, and design culture in India. By exploring her visionary ideas and leadership, this study offers insights into the development of design institutions while emphasizing the significance of female leaders in shaping the field of architecture and design
