Abstract: The research stems from the curiosity that why do some places in the city continue to remain relevant over time while others do not. Christopher Alexander defines ‘Timelessness’ as a quality that places embody over time. These places embody memory and meaning and continue to remain relevant over time. Aldo Rossi defines Urban artifacts as the primary elements of the city that persist over time. This research focusses on the relation between these two theories and aims to identify and explain the linkage and relationship between Timelessness and Urban Artifacts. Both the theories and their characteristics are understood and common and differential characteristics are identified. A framework has been developed for understanding the above relationship and analyse for the case of Horniman Circle, which is an important Urban Artifact for city of Mumbai. Qualitative methods of mapping, on-site observation, spatial sequence, isovist diagram, on site sketching, photographic documentation, and semi structured interview and questionnaire where only vocal responses are expected was used to collect data. Findings indicate Timelessness as a quality of Urban artifacts and the attributes of this relationship can be categorised into (a) people’s association and (b) continuity. The study provides values necessary for consideration while designing urban public spaces and conserving an Urban Artifact.
