The Matter protocol, a standardized communication protocol for smart home devices, has emerged as a transformative force in the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape. Its primary objective is to establish a unified language for smart devices, enabling seamless interoperability and compatibility across a diverse range of manufacturers. This thesis delves into the intricacies of the Matter protocol, exploring its fundamental architecture, security mechanisms, and potential impact on the future of smart home ecosystems. Specifically, the thesis examines the protocol’s hierarchical structure, encompassing nodes, endpoints, clusters, and attributes, which facilitates structured and standardized communication among devices. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the security measures employed by Matter, including secure device pairing, end-to-end encryption, and device authorization, which safeguard data privacy and protect against cyberattacks. By elucidating the Matter protocol’s technical underpinnings and highlighting its transformative potential, this thesis contributes to the advancement of smart home technologies and the realization of a truly interconnected IoT ecosystem.en_US
