dc.description.abstract | Adaptation is a complex phenomenon, a dynamic process occurring universally. The truth of architecture is that isolated, unchanging forms and single-use structures pre dominate hence buildings are unable to adjust to changing needs because this concept is an acceptable practice. In early times, human behavior was substantially determined by traditions, and change occurred at a considerably slower rate. Society’s evolution is speeding up these days, and there are a vast array of new technological and cultural problems that need to be addressed. Adaptability in architecture defines the nature of the built form i.e. how it can evolve with changing times and needs. Humans are adaptable beings who adapt their living conditions to suit their demands. The phrase “adaptable architecture” refers to a design that allows certain components to change in reaction to external stimuli such as users or the environment (Leliveld, 2007). Al though we have advanced technologically in building construction, manual/automatic components that are used for modern adaptable solutions in the building remain large ly unavailable and unaffordable for most parts of India. Vernacular buildings of India have withstood the test of time with changing needs of the user while remaining func tional for almost a century (or more). Understanding how flexibility and adaptability help in space making through the study of these vernacular built forms may help in bridging the gap in the architectural design process to provide better architectural solu tions which are easily affordable. This research focuses on studying adaptation as a phenomenon of change in social and physical reforms within a built form, to determine how user/function adapts to the space/building or vice versa through the case studies of residential vernacular courtyard typology of pol houses in Dhal ni Pol, Ahmedabad. | en_US |
