Decoding Framework of Imageability In Case of Walled City of Ahmedabad

Abstract

This research thesis deals with the “Image of the City”, and whether or not this ‘Image’ has any value, and whether it can be modified or not. There are several roles to play in the urban structure. Among them, there are few things to be observed, recalled, recognized, and implemented. Giving images to the city is kind of a design challenge that designers face. As every city has its own characteristics, the image is through which the city can be seen. While analyzing this study, the thesis explores the Indian context in order to determine the applicability of the framework of Kevin Lynch in various cultural and geographical contexts. And it tries to figure out whether or not this framework still stands true or needs to be modified. For this research, the walled city of Ahmedabad and particularly the Khadia region was chosen for fieldwork and analysis. As a result, a human response analysis was performed to fulfill the goals of this research. For this study, the method of Kevin Lynch was used as a basis and all the researchrwork was done withrthe aid of the structure suggested by Kevin Lynch in his book "Image of the City" in 1960. The city provides opportunities for exploring, learning, and application of people’s perspectives to the framework. The categorization of the study and the classification of the research responses contributed to inferences that were different from the predicted learning outcomes. The key thesis focuses on the elements identified by Lynch in this field of research. The research will conclude by showing what all are the elements that contribute to the image of the city for the Indian cities. It also discusses if the image of Indianrcities can be represented by the fiverelements of Lynch, or whether any alteration is required to it.
