dc.description.abstract | Roof signifies shelter, defining a space within and hence suggesting a volume. The function of the roof is not just protecting the structure from natural elements but also demonstrating the character of a building. In each case, the roof pitch, the material, size are attributes that help in creating a distinct identity of the roof. Through time, the charac ter and form of the roof have evolved having being influenced by change in the use of material, construction techniques and climatic considerations. Architecture is an uninterrupted process. However new the design and purpose may be, it is impossible to create a work without under standing the preexisting constructs. It is thus necessary to understand from history, what is constant and therefore alive today and what is transient. All designs therefore are derived from the notions and ob servations of the past, knowingly or unknowingly. This study aims at deriving roof forms through building layout by carefully studying and analyzing the vernacular architecture of Kerala. This paper also explains the relationship between various elements that make a space by taking examples of residential architecture in Kerala. The parameters for the analysis have been derived through the understanding of the roof as an element by secondary analysis of Kerala house-form and its relation with the building layout. Further, it illustrates the use of multiple joineries and their role in deriving a par ticular roof form. | en_US |
