Abstract: Vernacular architecture are the interpretation of cultural connectivity as they are the result of tried and tested solutions of the climate and the material available which fits the culture of the users and assure a proper functioning of the lifestyle of people. It is important to consider both physical and socio-cultural characters, while laying a larger amount of stress on the latter than the former. It is important to determine the aspects of any culture and gain insights of its underlying values for learning the var ious choices of the possible dwelling responses clearly. Residential architecture of India is the response to the cul ture as well and varies from region to region, courtyard typology one such indigenous typology of house form which can be seen in most of the traditional houses of India. Started with the idea as a protective area from out side forces, it has grown into a logical configuration with the climate and socio-cultural benefits which are the reasons of consistency of this typology. With the change in time influence of western culture and introduction to new technologies, culture of the people has be affected which led to modifications in the house .It is important for architects to understand the relation ship of culture with the dwelling how does the change in culture affects the house for that a one way is to study the transformation of traditional houses in layers with the time, this process which engages active users can provide valuable understanding to the problem of non- individual expression of architecture in today’s world. This paper focuses on identifying the role of culture informing courtyard typology and the impacts on the typology because of their changing lifestyle. It is the study of relation of courtyard and the house form in terms of socio-cultural aspects for that, as the distinction between what a form is and what it means to a particular social group is the key to understanding courtyard architecture.
