Abstract: Water as a design element has been used in architecture since the historic times. The attributes of water are manipulated to achieve various spatial characters in residential, cultural, religious or any other function. Therefore, it is very important to understand and implement water as a design element to effectively incorporate water’s symbolism, history and physical nature, which will enhance the relationship between water and architecture. In this research, the interest in the subject was focused on analyzing private living spaces, having a connection to a water feature, in the context of built. Therefore, the residential typology has been chosen. The approach points for the case studies have been derived by studying the literature reviews. Two case studies have been studied for this research, both being in Ahmedabad. The inferences and the conclusion from those studies reflected that water as a design element is very crucial in the designing of spaces.
