Abstract: | Today many countries in the world are facing disparities in the terms of development. Particularly, in developing countries like India, housing for poor and marginalised people is a challenging urban planning subject. The major reason for this is 'Migration.' Migration from rural to urban areas has particularly increased in the past decade due to industrialization and rapid urbanisation. With excess people migrating to cities in search of job opportunities and better living facilities, it often results into congestion in living areas due to lack of economic inflow, unorganised settlements are developed in order to satisfy the housing needs of the migrated population; hence this leads to the formation of 'slums' in the form of Urban Sprawl. Many projects and policies come up with the new change in the approaches and the structural changes to be pursued for urban development in the country. Gujarat government has come up with a new in-situ rehabilitation policy under Rehabilitation and Redevelopment of the Slums 2010 in Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad, like many other cities of India, faces the problem of rapidly growing squatter settlements. This research examines 'The Regulations for Rehabilitation and Redevelopment of the Slums 2010, Gujarat', its subsequent amendments and implementation process across Ahmedabad. The study highlights the stakeholders' roles – Developer, competent authorities, slum dwellers, and the external agency / non governmental organization (N.G.O.), and explores dynamic partnerships between the stakeholders and challenges involved in the course of implementation. Mahila Housing SEWA Trust (M.H.T.), one of the renowned N.G.O.s in Ahmedabad, has been involved in many slum redevelopment schemes developed by the private developers. Moreover, the design strategies will be studied, and problems and issues faced by the slum dwellers residing in the newer and developed housing units will be addressed, and possible changes in the design developments will be suggested. The parameters used and developed for designing the housing units will be studied. Further, this research will compare the multiple case studies taken into account and provide data regarding the merits and demerits of space-making and its policy |
