Abstract: Architecture directly or indirectly represents cultural identity of the user. Every community has its unique culture upon which its architecture was developed. Traditional architecture and culture are two interconnected terms that allows man to create meaningful physical environments with distinctive personality and identity expressed through elements and features. This interrelation also helps in bridging the gaps between built form and its inhabitants. Traditional house form expresses culture of an entire community where inhabitants make alterations according to their specific needs while preserving harmony with the surroundings. Rajasthan being the land of kings and royalty, exhibits astounding morphology with its distinct architectural style, reflected in their traditional house form called Havelis. Havelis of Jaipur have left an impact because of construction techniques, spatial planning and reflection of culture. The spaces generated in a Haveli was a representation of lifestyle and culture of the inhabitants. The traditional houses of Jaipur, a geographically and culturally significant built form, would be taken as a suitable case for an in-depth analysis and its reflection on contemporary houses. Contemporary architecture is connected to the roots of Traditional architecture in some or the other way. This research aims to study the constants and additionally to understand the design elements of the past and its reflection in modern buildings. The physical and spatial configuration of the built with the amalgamation of elements notify how the spaces are experienced, explored and apprehended. This study will contribute to our understanding of how people have carried on their associations and experiences with Havelis into contemporary homes. Over time, these elements were modified to serve functions other than those for which they were originally created, and new meanings were discovered for them. The purpose of this study is to stablish and understand those links that connects past with present architecture. Overall, it attempts to analyse the use of traditional design elements on the formation of architectural spaces in modern homes by applying a qualitative – analytical method focussing on detailed analysis from field observation, interviews with the residents and literature review through supporting documents. This will bring an understanding of constants which have been kept intact along with certain changes experienced over time. This research may in future help to understand cross cultural influences on house form.
