dc.description.abstractizing energy consumption may be a crucial attribute in sustainable building. Building materials have a significant impact on building sustainability since they affect the building's energy consumption and environmental implications. Sustainable construction materials are gaining popularity due to their environmental, social, and economic benefits. Sustainable material selection is an important concept in building design. This paper reviews the key indicators that indicate the sustainability of the material used for constructing buildings. It also analyses the materials used in construction of traditional as well as contemporary houses of Ahmedabad. The purpose of the study is to understand the parameters of selecting a sustainable material and to analyses materials used in construction and list down the materials that have less negative impact on environment and can be used in a hot and dry climate. The study focuses on analysing and comparing primary materials used in the buildings built in 20th and 21st century. The parameters of material selection and the properties of materials used in traditional and contemporary houses are understood by the literature review. The limitation of this study is that this study will not focus on site context of the buildings. The general method used will help evaluate the effectiveness of the material used in the building. From the case studies, the primary materials will be selected and analyzed based on the thermal properties. A questionnaire is being filled by the occupants of the building to know the thermal comfort of the residents in the building. A detailed study on mapping down the properties of the materials is done and a comparison chart is made. Simulation is done on a model by changing materials to check the thermal properties of material. Inferences drawn from the comparative study will help people choose a material with less negative impact on the environment in hot and dry climatic zone.en_US
