The ‘public square,’ which derives its functions from political, religious, commercial, and leisure activities, has long been an important aspect of city planning. The form, internal function, surrounding land and building uses, as well as its relationship to India’s city fabric, all had an impact on pedestrian use of these locations. These features are investigated through a historical and descriptive survey, a field or questionnaire survey, and a study of a few existing public locations in India. People who use the square are of many ages, occupations, religions, and social backgrounds. These squares seemed to appeal to the entire community. If an open square is to become a significant part of the urban structure, it must be designed to maximise the influence of the variables that would enhance its amenity, desirability, and hence the degree of its use, particularly in India.en_US
