Abstract: | Servo Drive is an amplifier that powers the servomotor. Servo drives are extensively used in the industries in applications pertaining to positioning systems, precise control, labeling, packaging, radars and several other applications. For industrial applications, ac machines have shadowed their dc counterpart due to their simple and rugged construction. In the last decade, the cost of the permanent magnet materials has substantially reduced resulting in wide spread use of Permanent Magnet motors. Also the focus in the field of servomotors has shifted from brushed motors to brushless motors. Hence in servo applications Permanent Magnet Brushless DC motors and PMSM fed by PWM inverter are widely used. This report focuses on the selection of the type of servo drive and servomotor best suited for the servo application. Two types of permanent magnet brushless motors are discussed at length and a comparison is made between the two. Simulation of control of PMBLDC motor in freewheeling chopping mode as well as vector control of PMSM motor has been presented. The control strategy for vector control of PMSM motor has also been implemented with the help of C/C++ programs through dynamic link library. An algorithm for vector control of PMSM and speed and position sensing has been developed. A prototype of PMSM drive intended for velocity control has been developed. Results of the simulation have been verified using the tests carried out on the prototype. |
