Abstract: The Coil box has been applied or proposed in every type of hot strip mill, con_gu- ration making the coil box one of the most e_ective technologies available to maximize hot strip mill investment. The coil box arranged between the roughing stand and _n- ishing mill of a hot rolling mill forms coils of transfer bars, thus serving both material and heat accumulator. During uncoiling, the former transfer bar tail runs into _nish- ing mill as transfer bar head. Coil Box maintains homogenous temperature of steel coil which reduces the capital and manufacturing cost of steel coil. Coil Box consists several components like Tuck Arm which sometimes encounter unfortunate failures. This dissertation work gives design and failure analysis of Piston Rod Eye of hydraulic Cylinder in Coil Box and also design modi_cation of Tuck Arm in Coil Box that contains Tilting Apron, Pivot Arm, Knife Edge and Hydraulic cylinder. The kinematics analysis and static force analysis is carried out and the outcomes employed in _nite element analysis to _nd out possible cause of failure. Fatigue life of piston rod eye is calculated. Design modi_cations are made for piston rod eye.
