Network Security Technology for Wi-Fi and LAN

Abstract

Network security is one of the most important areas of concern in the communicationeld, as it is important to protect the users data and information. The thesis presentsthe technologies for the network security and the tools to nd the vulnerabilities inthe network. The types of rewall and Intrusion detection system for the protectionare explained. The denition of virus , worms and Trojans are also explained . Thewireless security is explained with the vulnerabilities and the countermeasures to pro-tect it. The tools like NetStumbler which works on windows platform is used whichdetects and marks the relative position of the wireless network with GPS, AiroPeektool which works on the windows platform is a comprehensive packet analyzer forIEEE 802.11 wireless LAN and Airsnort which works on windows platform is a toolused to recover encryption keys are used for the Wi-Fi security.In the second phase of the project secure le transfer module has been created usingthe Linux operating system. Also the Intrusion Detection and Prevention System hasbeen implemented by installing and conguring snort, which is a free and open sourcenetwork intrusion prevention system and network intrusion detection system capableof performing packet logging and real time trac analysis of IP network.
