Abstract: Design and implementation of energy efficient protocol stack for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a challenging task due to power and computational constraints. Swarm intelligence deals with natural and artificial systems composed of many individuals that coordinate using decentralized control and self-organization. Swarm Intelligence focuses on the collective behaviours of social insects with each other and with their environment. Examples of swarm intelligence based systems are colonies of ants and termites, schools of fish, flocks of birds. Swarm behaviour ensures safe separation between swarm members while enforcing a level of cohesion. These two properties are important for Wireless Sensor Network to provide low redundancy coverage and reliable communication. In this paper we have proposed ant based optimized energy- efficient cluster head election algorithm using RSSI and LQI values. The proposed energy-efficient algorithm increases packet reception rate. It also ensures the separation and alignment behaviour.
