During Bhuj Earthquake many of the buildings collapsed due to formation of columns sway mechanism. So it is. necessary to provide column stronger than beam in lateral load resisting system. A Capacity Design approach is likely to. assure predictable and satisfactory inelastic response for which even dynarhic analysis technique may be insufficient, because Capacity Design doesn't allow structures to develop undesirable hinge mechanism: As far as Capacity Design is concerned, a main feature is to avoid undesirable modes of failure, particularly formation of plastic hinges formed at both lop and bottom of column. The paper aims towards, understanding of a Capacity Design concept and applying the same in practice. A 2-D frame was undertaken for the analysis. Modeling of building was done with ETABS and ultimate capacities of the frame were calculated using Non-linear Static Pushover Analysis. The concept of capacity design was introduced to rectify the present capacity of the frame. The parameters affecting the response of the building like drift as per IS:893-2002(part-I) and ductility factor were also observed .Lastly, the concept of capacity design was also applied to the 3-D structure.en_US
