dc.description.abstract | Steel plate shear walls (SPSW) are used as a primary lateral load resisting system in high- rise buildings in different country like USA, Japan, Canada and Mexico. Different types of steel plate shear walls used in multi-storey buildings are stiffened steel plate wall, unstiffened steel plate wall and composite steel plate wall. Unstiffened steel plate wall provides high strength and stiffness compared to stiffened and composite steel plate wall. Unstiffened steel plate wall consists of slender web plate which is connected by horizontal and vertical boundary elements. In unstiffened steel plate wall lateral loads are resisted by diagonal tension in the web plate and overturning forces in the vertical boundary elements. In this paper structural design of 50 storey steel building with SPSW is discussed. The central core of building consists of unstiffened steel plate shear walls with column as vertical boundary element and beam as horizontal boundary element. Modelling and analysis of the building is carried out using ETABS software. In this study steel plate shear wall is modelled as orthotropic membrane element. The local axes of the elements are rotated to match the angle of tensile stress and compression stiffness of the elements is ignored. Dead load, live load, along wind and across win forces and their combinations are considered for the design. Forces acting on the boundary elements due to web plate tensile stresses are considered for the design. Parametric study on effect of different sizes of boundary element on the web plate tensile stress is presented. Design of web plate and boundary elements is carried out based on IS: 800-2007 considering all load combinations | en_US |
