Pump Jack and pump drives play an important role in oil industries. The induction motor is used as the pump jack drives in oil field application. The failures of induction motor and pump jack can lead to expensive damage, loss of oil production, high maintenance & operational costs. So there is a strong demand for their reliable & safe operation. The condition monitoring (CM) & fault diagnosis (FD) has the potential to reduce the operating costs & enhance the reliability of operation by allowing the early detection of potentially catastrophic faults. With phenomenal advancements in the field of computer & instrumentation technology, the involvement of human in the actual fault detection decision making is slowly being replaced by automated tools. Hence, the online condition monitoring is the most preferred approach to detect & diagnose the problems. The paper reflects the state of the art development in this important area of CM & FD. After introducing induction motor and pump jack failure & the concepts of CM, the various techniques for this purpose have been discussed briefly. The most popular, current monitoring & vibration monitoring techniques detects the major faults of the machine and pump jack without disturbing the operation of the system. This paper reviews the current trends in this field & identifies the future research areas.en_US
