Abstract: The main objective of this thesis is to design the doubly salient permanent magnet motor and to analyze it with two dimensional (2-D) and three dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis (FEA) to get flux-linkage, torque, flux-density, and flux-lines of the doubly salient permanent magnet motor (DSPM). The computer aided design algorithm for the multi-phase doubly salient permanent magnet (DSPM) motors has been developed. A generalized equivalent magnetic circuit for DSPM motors is developed. The FE analysis has been carried out to study effects of various special aspects like non-uniform air gap, special pole shapes, skewed rotor teeth, effect of air gap length, and effect of stator pole arc on the performance of the DSPM motor. The project also includes the study of various capabilities of the commercially available finite element analysis software ANSYS for two dimensional (2-D) and three dimensional (3-D) analysis of the electromagnetic problems.
