Abstract: In the recent era demand of loading and unloading container tilting unit in plastic industries is tremendously increased. This dissertation deals with design and analysis of container tilting unit. General analytical design procedure is carried out for upper and base frame members of CTU. For such heavy steel structure design calculations of hydraulic cylinder force and pulley reactions are calculated to make the structure strong and safe. It has been found out that maximum force is acting at lift cylinder when it is fully closed. Static force analysis is carried out using nite element analysis to nd out possi- ble cause of failure in CTU structure. From the analysis, it is observed that guide pulley, cylinder support plate and lock pin housing have higher stress value. After checking experimentally it has been found out that rail section of CTU fails dur- ing unloading. The design has been modi ed by incorporating bearings so that C section will only move in one direction and same design has been analyzed using ANSYS(Commercially available FEA package). And found that modi ed design is safe. MIG wire size has been selected by considering material property and plate thickness. Weld size calculations have been carried out by considering load and plate thickness. For calculation of fatigue life two approaches viz. stress-life and LEFM are used to reduce the chances of failure. Fatigue failure of rail section will occur after 4:4605X105 cycles. The value of stress intensity factor calculated using ANSYS for cylinder support plate is much less than standard value. Therefore design of cylinder support plate is safe. Weld blow holes or porosity are assumed as initial crack size. It has been found that the cylinder support plate will fail just before 4:70X105 and size of crack is nearly 18 mm.
