dc.description.abstractVertical Machining Centre (VMC) counts as one of the prominent CNC ma- chines in which milling operation is carried primarily. VMC developments have brought about quantum improvements in its salient features like im- prove reliability, increased feeds, speeds and overall machine construction and rigidity. The present work explains the methodology of topology optimization of bed and column of a Vertical Machining Center (VMC).In machine tool, Struc- ture like beds, bases, columns, box-type housing, over arms, carriages and tables are containing major weight. In machine tools 70-80 percentage of the total weight of the machine is due to the structure.To improve both the static and dynamic performances, the machine tool structures should have high static sti ness and damping. Material distribution plays on the im- portant role in the structural strength and using material in required place can increase static sti ness with less mass. Higher cutting speeds can be facilitated only by structures which have high sti ness and good damping characteristics. As column and bed of machine tool are having major weight,these component are selected for optimization purpose.The above components are optimized with topology optimization method using OPTISTRUCT solver.Based on the topology optimization result geometry of bed and column are modi ed.The modi ed geometry result in decrease in weight,decrease in de ection as ob- tained in FE analysis and increase in natural frequency in modal analysis.en_US
