Abstract: Earthquake is a most destructive force on earth and is responsible to cause damages of man-made structures. In past earthquake events worldwide, it was observed that building with regular shape, size and geometry has performed well as compared to building with H,C,L,T and + shaped buildings. Therefore, it is important to control structural response of asymmetric buildings when subjected to earthquake ground motion. Structural response control using passive control devices like viscous damper, visco-elastic damper etc. are much researched now a days. In the present study structural response of asymmetric building with C,L,T type plan geometry and regular building is studied under four diffrent types of earthquake ground motions, namely Elentro, Kobe, Northridge and Loma Prieta. Structural response of regular building and asymmetric building is controlled using passive dampers-viscous damper and visco-elastic damper. Apart from this conventional lateral load resisting element shear wall is also used to control structural response of the building.Various response quantities like Displacement, Inter-storey Drift, Acceleration and Base Shear are extracted for building without damper,i.e. uncontrolled building and building with damper and shear wall i.e. controlled building. It is observed that controlled building shows moderate range of reduction for all response quantities as compared to uncontrolled building. It is found that various patterns of dampers and shear wall location adopted shows same order of reduction in all response quantities. It is observed that viscous damper shows better performance as compared to visco-elastic damper.
