Abstract: Conventionally an AC grid connected motor drive consists of an inverter and converter, where the three phase AC supply is converted to variable DC by means of rectifier and the developed variable DC is converted to AC by means of an inverter. Both these rectifier and inverter have six semiconductor switches, i.e. overall in an entire grid connected system there are twelve semiconductor switches. But due to large number of switches; cost, complexity and switching losses of the system are increased. In this project a three phase inverter & converter is to be developed using four IGBT switches. A new switching scheme, topology and concept is simulated in PSIM. On the basis of results of simulation a prototype is developed for three phase inverter for motor control and grid. The developed model is compared with conventional three phase inverter and converter. The criteria of comparison is mainly, compatibility, current ripple, power quality, rating of device, capacitor unbalance, switching losses, compactness and cost effectiveness.
