The lack of adequate knowledge of structural behavior under seismic loads has claimed many lives and caused extensive property loss. A lack of good design and inadequate earthquake resistance cause damages to man made structures. Hence it is necessary to examine the reasons of failures and improve upon it for the better performance in future earthquake. The recent earthquake has revealed that the seismic strengthening or rehabilitation of the building are one of the challenging task the structural engineer faces. The seismic retrofitting of building is the most effective methods of mitigating the seismic hazards. The purpose of retrofitting is to upgrade the strength and the ductility of existing damaged building so that it can withstand the future earthquake with minimum damage. Performance based seismic engineering is a modern approach in a controlled manner such as its behavior estimated at predicted performance levels. The thesis is focused on the performance of an existing RCC building, defining deficiencies, providing appropriate retrofitting and obtaining performance of a retrofitted RCC building. A G+7 RCC building constructed at Gandhinagar has considered for the performance based analysis. A pushover curve and performance point for an existing non retrofitted RCC building was obtained. The seismic deficiencies for RCC building were observed and same are compared with the calculated deficiencies by first principal of design philosophies. The retrofitted scheme suggested was based on guidelines provided by IITK-GSDMA, 2005. Comparison of non retrofitted and retrofitted RCC buildings were taken up based on pushover curve and performance point obtained. Commercially available, widely used software ETABS 8.11 was used for Nonlinear Static analysis of G+7 RCC building, available at computer center of Civil Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nirma University.en
