Abstract: | Voice over IP, also known as IP telephony, has until now considered a substandard technology. However, being today’s fastest growing segment in the telecommunication’s industry, Voice over IP is emerging as a powerful competitor to the services provided by the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). To successfully develop Voice over IP solutions, mechanisms are needed to integrate this new and evolving technology with the traditional circuit switch telephone networks. This project describes Voice over IP gateway which permits the routing of voice traffic and control information between circuit switched telephone networks and packet based computer networks. The gateway implemented here connects a single PSTN line to the IP network. This gateway provides value added service to a one or two-line home or office. Also in this project, work has been done on Quality of Service (QoS) for VoIP traffic. IP routers play an important role in providing QoS to the IP traffic. These IP routers provide QoS to the IP traffic according to scheduling policies implemented on them. Several well known scheduling policies are studied and simulated in the project and it is shown that how they affect the QoS of IP traffic, especially to VoIP traffic. |
