Abstract: Nowadays use of sensor nodes for analyzing surrounding environment is increasing. Data collection is a fundamental operation in wireless sensor networks (WSN) where sensor nodes measure attributes about a phenomenon of interest and transmit their readings to a common base station called as sink. Due to limitation of available energy resources, energy efficient operation is first requirement of any sensor network. There are always Trade-offs between energy and latency. As we try to decrease energy consumption, latency increases. There are some applications that require that data reaches to sink node within some time limit. In this dissertation, it has been investigated that how fast data can be collected at sink node. It is also found that centralized algorithms are less suitable for this kind of requirement. So, distributed data aggregation tree construction with an appropriate load balancing is proposed. Distributed data aggregation tree is constructed in such a way, that nodes having different parent nodes can transmit in same slot. But there is always chance of collision due to interference. To solve this problem transmission power control has been introduced. This approach reduces energy consumption and interference.
