Abstract: In today’s competitive industry marketplace, the companies face growing demands to improve process efficiencies, comply with environmental regulations, and meet corporate financial objectives. Given the increasing age of many industrial systems and the dynamic industrial manufacturing market, intelligent and low-cost industrial automation systems are required to improve the productivity and efficiency of such systems. The collaborative nature of industrial wireless sensor networks brings several advantages over traditional wired industrial monitoring and control systems, including self-organization, rapid deployment, flexibility, and inherent intelligent-processing capability. In this regard, IWSN plays a vital role in creating a highly reliable and self-healing industrial system that rapidly responds to real time events with appropriate actions. The theoretical part focuses on the description of the current panorama of the industrial WSN, its applications, design challenges and standardization. It describes the 6LoWPAN standard and the wireless transmission technology that it uses for its lower layers, the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. RPL (Routing protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks) basically requires that all communication paths go through a central router (the sink), but it is not the optional path in some cases like industrial application. In order to alleviate an extension of the protocol based on reactive scheme that can provide shorter path on-demand without necessarily going through the sink is p2p-rpl.
