Abstract: In Electrical systems Circuit breaker is a manually or automatically operated electrical switch to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. This dissertation focuses on design and development of a circuit breaker (CB) with a spring charged operating mechanism to achieve the desired performance. This CB works at a rating of 12kV & 800-2000A. The various operating parameters like contact travel, closing & tripping speed, contact force, etc have to be attained. This dissertation work includes design and kinematic analysis of circuit breaker operating linkages, auxiliary switch linkages, development of rack in rack out mechanism, spring energy balancing for reliable operation, and selection of proper dampers to eliminate the effect of undesired forces on structure during operation. Various kinematic, dynamic and force analysis are accompanied with the design of CB components. All the components of CB have been designed considering their performance parameters and the operating loading conditions. The failure mode effect analysis study has been performed to make the performance robust.
