Abstract: Engraving is method of producing a geometry, image or words by cutting, etching, laser, etc., on the surface of metal, wood, stone, acrylic, etc. The engraving process can either be done by hand with machine assistant or can be completely automated, depending on the item being engraved. In most commercial markets today, hand engraving has been replaced with milling using CNC engraving or milling machines because of its consistent and high quality work and also reduced machining time. The present work deals with the mechanical design of engraving machine to engrave mild steel, aluminium, wood and acrylic with table size of 1300 mm X 2500 mm and workpiece thickness upto 150 mm. The cutting forces are determined analytically for engraving operation which is a combination of milling and drilling. The high frequency motorised spindle has been selected and movement of the same has been achieved by linear motion guideways and ball screw assembly. A gantry moving machine structure is designed to reduce the length of the machine. A CAD model is prepared with the assembly drawing after designing and selection of parts required in machine.
