Abstract: Since few years, there has been a vast increase in the usage of IoT devices and it has a very tangible efect on various aspects of human life. Researchers have put immense effort for the development of the systems and techniques which can effectively provide assistance and safety to drivers, but the age of autonomous cars is still few decades away. The motive of this research project is to develop a prototype system which will help the old cars to turn into smart cars. The system will help to reduce the trafic accidents by providing driver assistance and safety features. The thesis provides an insightful survey of various techniques of advanced driver assistance systems which include three main categories viz. automotive system diagnosis, automotive cross-OEM applications and object detection on-roads. Also, a comprehensive survey and comparison of driver behaviour analysis including various well-established techniques of anti-drowsiness systems for safe driving are presented in this thesis. A hardware prototype is designed to check the working of the system in the real-time situation. The proposed system tries to provide the above mentioned features with limited hardware computational capabilities in the cost effective manner. Moreover, this thesis provides new insights and future research directions in the area of IoT in cars for driver assistance and safety. Research is still limited and can be extended with the availability of various high-performing hardware equipments. Also, end user's perception and their acceptance of the new technology could be examined
