D AND OBJECTIVE: Liver cirrhosis is a long- lasting degenerative disorder in which normal liver cells are injured and swapped by scar tissue. Many allopathic medicines available for liver cirrhosis, but still no cure of liver cirrhosis. So, rising number of patients direct attention towards the ayurvedic medicines. The accumulative use of ayurvedic medicines because herb is safe and having low side effects. Many ayurvedic formulations are available in market to treat liver cirrhosis and other liver dysfunctions. The present retrospective study was conducted with the aim to evaluate effect of ayurvedic treatment in liver cirrhosis. METHODOLOGY: The proposed study was a single centric, retrospective study. Patients who were suffering from liver diseases were enrolled in the study as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. The treatment given for liver cirrhosis patients were Livful-DS, Tab Amruta, Cap Adliv forte, Tab Raktda and Tab Chandrakala ras etc. The demographic parameters, life style parameters, laboratory parameters, medical history were collected from patients file. Statistical analysis was performed using student’s paired-t test by prism software. RESULT: This retrospective study includes 141 patients in which 110 were males and 31 were females. In our study we found that the major complications were ascites, splenomegaly and portal hypertension etc. 1) Total bilirubin level, ammonia, liver specific enzymes (AST, ALT, GGT, ALP levels) and serum creatinine were significantly (P<0.05) decreased after one year of ayurvedic treatment. 2) Total protein level, hematological parameters like Hb, RBC, WBC, platelets were significantly (P<0.05) increased after one year of ayurvedic treatment. 3) Serum electrolytes (Na, K+ and Cl-) were remained within normal range after the treatment. CONCLUSION: There is a marked beneficial effect of ayurvedic treatment in patients with liver cirrhosis as it has significantly improved liver and ematological parameters. However there is a need to study its effectiveness in more patients with more information about different liver parameters including USG of abdomen and molecular mechanisms.en_US
