In a deregulated electricity market, it may always not be possible to dispatch all of the contracted power transactions due to congestion of the transmission lines. This report presents a generalized approach for determination of optimal locations for placement of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTs) devices in the power system with an objective of congestion relief and to reduce overloading of the lines. An objective function is formulated and a detailed mathematical model for each objective is presented in terms of system parameters. Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTSs) devices can be an alternative to reduce the flows in heavily loaded lines, resulting in an increased loadability, low system loss, improved stability of the network, reduced cost of generation and fulfill contractual requirement by controlling the power flows in the network A method to de- termine the optimal location of FACTs has been suggested in this work. The parameters to be optimized have been identified and incorporated in the objective function for each device. Sensitivity analysis is used to locate optimal buses to place the FACTs devices in the network. The optimal location is determined based on real power performance index.en_US
