Abstract: In manufacturing of pressure vessel, pipes and elbows, welding is primary process by which different parts joined to each other. Generally, carbon steel material used for manufacturing of pipes. Pipes constantly meet water or other fluid or gases. Carbon steel is corrosive material in nature, hence that it cannot be directly use. On the other hand, stainless steel is non-corrosive material, also used for manufacturing of pipes. Stainless steel is costlier as compared to carbon steel. To overcome this situation overlay welding technique could perform. In overlay, welding pipes made from carbon steel and thin layer of the stainless steel material is weld inside surface of the pipes. Present work includes design of the universal weld overlay system for the pipe inside surface. It has been designed with view to reduce capital investment and space requirement. Initially propose designs for the setup have been discussed considering different parameters like rotation of work piece or rotation of welding torch, welding position (1G or 2G). From the proposed designs of overlay machine setup, one, which gives better performance, is selected for universal overlay welding machine.
