Abstract: In an injection moulding process, the clamping unit is used to hold the two halves of the mould in proper alignment by applying clamping force. The clamping force or tonnage is transferred from the mould to platens and then the force is transferred from the platen to the tie bar. The tie bar should not be elongated or deflected beyond its elastic limit. So, the stress generated due to the force acting on the tie bar should not be higher than the yield strength of the material. The tie bar is subjected to fatigue loading. So, the objective of the project is to estimate the prestressing load applied at the time of assembly process and considering the same, design of the tie bar under operation is to be obtained through fatigue analysis. Based on the design calculation, four designs have been analyzed in the project. Each design is analyzed in FEA analysis software considering prestressing and no prestressing conditions. Based on the results of FEA software, the appropriate design can be selected considering the required criteria of a factor of safety as well as the cost for the particular injection moulding machine.
