The shell & tube heat exchanger is essential component in refinery and petroleum industries. In such industries, it is used for heat transfer between highly viscous and dirty fuids which cause high pressure drop and it result into high pumping power. The conventional segmental baffles used in heat exchanger forces fluid flow into zigzag manner due to its arrangement which cause higher shellside pressure drop and low heat transfer rate due to flow stagnation at dead zones. The helical baffles compared to segmental baffes creates spiral flow which cause less pressure drop and eliminate the dead zones. which results into high heat transfer rate. In this dissertation, the analysis is performed on shell & tube heat exchanger with segmental baffle by varying baffle cut and helical baffle by helix angle for an optimum result of heat transfer rate and pressure drop after enhancement of performance, the mechanical design of shell & tube heat exchanger is done using ASME Sec.VIII, Div.1 and TEMA standard codes for safe performance of shell & tube heat exchnager at design pressure and design temperature.en_US
