Abstract: | In the present world, the demand for ample amount of power, that too with better quality, is increasing enormously, which can be fulfilled either by increasing the power generation or by making better utilization. An effort is made to have better utilization by designing a more efficient and optimized permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). First of all, the construction and design theory of PMSM is studied thoroughly. Then, the already established motor design is assessed using the FEA software. Different performance characteristics are examined. These results are verified with the actual results obtained in laboratory test setup. Then, the design algorithm is developed for the design of interior v-shape web type PMSM. Using this algorithm, two motors with different ratings are designed. For these motors, FEA is performed. Then, to achieve minimum cogging torque, analysis of various magnet spread angle and magnet v-angle is performed on the same keeping all other parameters constant. From this analysis, optimum magnet spread angle and optimum magnet v-angle are found. Based on it, a simple generalized equation is developed to find out optimum magnet spread angle for any motor design. The developed rotor design algorithm is then modified using this generalized equation. |
