Abstract: The error correcting codes have gained popularity due to its several well known prop- erties, like the distance property and the block length. The convolution code and the turbo code are used as error correcting codes which are able to come very close to the theoretical limit, the Shannon's limit. The convolution code and the turbo codes are used in the 3G (third Generation) mobile technologies and the standards de ned in the IEEE 802.16 (WiMax). The thesis describes the evaluation and the performance of the convolution code based on the code rate, BER, Eb/No, and di erent modulation techniques. Sec- ondly the study, analysis and implementation of the turbo codes with encoding and decoding methods have been carried out using AWGN channel with BPSK modu- lation technique. The turbo code encoder is built using a parallel concatenation of two recursive systematic convolution (RSC) codes with interleaver and the associated decoder, using Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm (SOVA).
